Fire Exit Door Signage Regulations

Exit routes must support the maximum permitted occupant load for each floor served and the capacity of an exit route may not decrease in the direction of exit route travel to the exit discharge.

Not only could failure to comply result in massive fines in the event of a fire or other emergency non compliance could cost the lives of employees visitors. If there is a fire in the area where occupants are they are already being exposed to smoke fire and heat. Fire exit signs are not a requirement if it is obvious where the exit is for example when there is just one door at the front of a small shop where it is clear that would be the means of escape. Fire doors are inside buildings residential and commercial and are internal doors that need to be kept closed in order to stop the spread of fire between different areas of a building.

Contrary to what some might believe there is a difference between fire doors and fire exit doors. Ceilings of exit routes must be at least 7 feet 6 inches high. For more complex buildings however fire exit signs are a necessity. An exit access must be at least 28 inches wide at all points.

Fire door standards and legislative requirements. If the direction of travel to the exit or exit discharge is not immediately apparent signs must be posted along the exit access indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit and exit discharge.
